ANOTHER STRONG SHORT-TRACK RUN FOR AMBROSE


Marcos Ambrose has posted yet another strong short-track result with 14th place in the Goody’s Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia today.

Ambrose posted his second straight top 15 finish on a half-mile track in Martinsville, his first Sprint Cup start at the venue. Today’s effort follows a 10th place result at Bristol last weekend.

The result lifts the Australian into 21st in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings after six races and gives his team great confidence in their short-track program.

Ambrose stayed on the lead lap all day in the 500-lap race and was able to beat many more established drivers for the second week in succession.

Jimmie Johnson won today’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500 ahead of Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart.

Ambrose will be back on track next weekend in the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas.

WHAT MARCOS HAS TO SAY:

Q: Are you pleased with your performance at your first two NSCS short track races?

“If you had said that we would get away with two top-15s (finishes) in my first two short tracks with a COT - I would have taken it.

“We had old tyres on there at the end and we were able to stay on the lead lap all day. I just have to thank my crew so much - Frank Kerr (crew chief) and everyone involved. They give me awesome cars and we just keep getting better and better.

“I also have to thank all the guys at Michael Waltrip Racing who help us with our partnership back at the shop. They do a great job and give us great stuff every week. We’re reliable, we’re fast and it’s just been a lot of fun.

“I’m kind of over this short track stuff for the moment – let’s go back to a normal speedway.”

Q: Were you able to get in your own groove around Martinsville?

“I have no groove – I’m just hanging on the whole time. I’ll take it.

“I like the bottom out there. I seem to be able to keep out of trouble out there. We finished the race intact and on the lead lap both races on the short tracks and I am pretty pleased.”

Q: What do you think about racing at Martinsville?

"It’s tough every single lap and these guys are really getting after it out there. The experience is awesome and I’m pretty tired right now so I will have to train a little harder for the next round of short tracks.

“It’s a lot of fun. This is an awesome track and just a lot of fun to drive. It’s very difficult to get around here for 500 laps. I ran out of brakes, ran out of tyres, ran out of talent and somehow we managed to finish.”

FINAL WEEKEND FOR AMBROSE BUSHFIRE CHARITY AUCTION …

This weekend marks the final few days of the Marcos Ambrose bushfire charity auction.

Ambrose has two one-off items up for grabs via an online auction on his official website, MarcosAmbrose.com.

One item is a specially-painted Impact race helmet, painted to replicate an Australian CFA volunteer fire-fighting helmet and worn by the Australian NASCAR driver in Sprint Cup races in Bristol and Martinsville as well as this weekend in Texas.

The second item is a fire-fighting jacket, as worn by Yarra Glen CFA volunteer fire-fighter Steve Teear in the Black Saturday fires in Victoria, Australia in February.

The jacket has been signed by the Yarra Glen fire-fighting crew as well as some of the biggest stars in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (see story below for full rundown on names).

AMBROSE HAPPY TO BE BACK ON FAST TRACK IN TEXAS …

After two strong runs at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule’s short track venues, Bristol Motor Speedway and Martinsville Speedway, Marcos Ambrose is happy to be returning to the bigger, faster style tracks.

Texas Motor Speedway is among the fastest tracks on the NASCAR schedule, up there with sister tracks such as Atlanta and Las Vegas.

The Superspeedways of Daytona and Talladega are much bigger race tracks, but as cars run restrictor plates at those venues it’s the 1.5-mile speedways with steep banking, such as Texas, that offer the highest top speeds.

FIRST RACE IN CLOROX COLOURS FOR AMBROSE …

Marcos Ambrose will make his first start in the colours of Clorox in the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth this weekend.

Ambrose has raced in the colours of Kingsford for the past two seasons in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and also run in the colours of STP.

Both Kingsford and STP are brands of the Clorox Company and Clorox itself is one of the world’s best-known cleaning brands.

It will be the third livery for Ambrose this year, with the fourth colour scheme – for Bush’s Beans – to debut in Richmond, Virginia next month.

POINTS SITUATION SHOWS RECENT PROGRESS …

Marcos Ambrose currently sits 21st in the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Driver’s standings after six races, a solid result given that 48 drivers and team have been entering each week so far this season.

Ambrose is just one point out of the top 20 in points and within 100 points of the top 12 cut-off for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

But the driver himself is not looking at points and statistics this early in the season, keen to keep his eye on the job and continue to work with #47 crew chief Frank Kerr on ensuring the current pace of the JTG Daugherty Racing entry continues to grow.

MARCOS TWITTER ALMOST AT 500 …

Marcos Ambrose’s Twitter feed continues to grow in popularity, with the Australian NASCAR driver just a couple of ‘followers’ off the 500 mark.

Not bad considering the first ‘Tweet’ came on February 20, with some 60 updates since that first entry.

WHAT MARCOS HAS TO SAY:

On the track …

“My team-mate David Reutimann went to Texas in January to participate in a Goodyear tyre test,” said Ambrose.

“The test went really well. I feel like I can ask David any question about that track or any place for that matter. David, Michael and I are all using each other to get better and I think that shows.

“It’s a great track, one of the fastest we go to all season. The crowd is always great in Texas and it’s a fantastic facility. It’s a tough race track for the drivers and teams but we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

On the race …

“We’ve had a great start to the season and this weekend will mark the first time that we have run the Clorox colours on our car," said Ambrose.

“It’s time for families to think about their Spring cleaning regimen and the best way to remind them would be to place the Clorox machine up front all weekend.

“If I am running with David and Michael (Waltrip), I know I am doing a good job.

“When I chose to come here, I wanted to see if I could compete in NASCAR. I wanted the opportunity to see if I could do it or if I need to pack up and head home to Australia.

“This deal is still new to me. Even though I am not labelled as a rookie, technically, I am a rookie. I still have to go to the rookie meetings.”

“We’re in the position to keep running well. We knew if we were fast enough, we would finish in the top 15 and then the top 10.

“Now, we’ve got to aim for top-five finishes. After two short track races, I'm ready to go back to a normal speedway."

TOP 10 RUN BEFORE ENGINE FAILURE FOR AMBROSE IN TEXAS


Marcos Ambrose has shown some of his best speed in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition before being robbed of the opportunity to capitalise with engine failure in the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas today.

Ambrose started from 11th position and was a top 10 contender for the first half of the race in the debut event of the blue Clorox paint scheme of the #47 JTG Daugherty Racing entry.

The Australian had impressive pace, ran inside the top 10 and looked headed towards a breakthrough result at the fast 1.5-mile speedway.

But around half-race distance, problems began to surface, beginning with a sticking throttle for Ambrose, which saw him drop outside the top 10.

Ambrose persevered with the ailment, but soon more serious problems arose and his engine dropped to seven cylinders. On lap 216 of 334, the engine completely gave way, spelling the second engine-related retirement this season for the 32-year-old.

While the potential was most certainly there for a top 10 finish and the opportunity to jump into the top 20 in the Sprint Cup Series standings, Ambrose unfortunately lost vital ground today and slips seven spots down to 28th in the points.

Ambrose is taking confidence from today’s sensational pace and looking to get back on track next weekend when he makes his second Sprint Cup Series start at Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona for the Subway Fresh Fit 500.

Jeff Gordon claimed his first win at Texas Motor Speedway in the Samsung 500 today ahead of team-mate Jimmie Johnson and Greg Biffle.

WHAT MARCOS HAS TO SAY:

“We’ve had a lot of engine issues that have really hurt our performance,” said Ambrose.

“But you can’t blame people who are trying to push the edge in terms of performance.

“We ran strong all day, while the car was running well. But that means nothing if you don’t finish so it’s very disappointing for us.

“We took a hit in the points. It’s not often you have a car that is that good, so to waste it like we did today is just a real shame.

“Our team is strong, we’ve got great cars. We’re better that this, but that’s racing. Not every day is going to be your day.

“At least we can walk away saying we were running well. We’ll try to get our season back on track over the next few events.”

On the sticking throttle …

“It wasn’t easy out there,” said Ambrose.

“I was balancing between switching the motor off with the kill switch, in case the throttle was sticking too long in the corner.

“I also have a lever above the gas pedal for this kind of situation in case the throttle hangs, I can actually kick the throttle up and get it off that way.

“So between kicking the throttle around and using the kill switch I got around somehow!

“It’s part of racing at this level. Not every lap is perfect and you’ve got issues that come up during the day that you’ve got to deal with. We had our fair share today but no complaints.

“I’m up here in the top series and competitive, running well, passing good guys and we’re a contender every time we run these days.”
